Big Shots Carolina Finale Day 1 Recap

Take a look at the recap from Day 1 of the Big Shots Carolina Finale.

The Big Shots Carolina Finale got off to a bang for Team HoopState (NC) in the 15U Gold Championship Bracket as they started the event with two easy victories over Flight 22 (NC) and More Than Basketball (SC). Kevin Concepcion (6’0, 2023 Guard, Vance HS) led the way for THS averaging 16.0 points per game and finishing atop the division in scoring with 32 total points. He put up 12 points in their opening win with one made 3-pointer and 20 points with three made 3-pointers in their two games of the day. Concepcion wasn’t the only one that had a strong opening day, either. Amari Odom (6’2, 2023 Point Guard, Panther Creek HS) was another prospect that had a productive day at the floor general position. He put up 11 points in their second victory of the day. 

Big man Zaeyon Leathers (6’3, 2023 Forward, Mt. Zion Christian Academy) didn’t disappoint for THS, either, as he averaged 15.5 ppg in the paint and showed off his game as a paint presence. Jaybron Harvey (6’4, 2023 Forward, Southern HS) was another prospect that came on strong in their victory over More Than Basketball, putting up 21 points, showing off his relentless ability to attack the rim. They’ll be a squad to watch in the championship game on Sunday @ 2:30 PM.

More Than Basketball wasn’t a team to take lightly at Big Shots Carolina Finale. They opened the day with a 74-71 victory over Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities (TN/VA/NC), which was led by 2024 Eli Ellis and his 27 points. He made four 3-pointers and showed off his ability to score in a variety of ways while Jamar Livingston (6’3, 2023 Guard, Science Hill HS) showed off his ability to create and get to the free throw line with 17 points on five made field goals and seven made free throws.

More Than Basketball still found a way to overcome Tri-Cities dynamic backcourt led by a trio of Chauncey Capers (5’4, 2023 Point Guard, Fort Dorchester HS), Dovereal Fishburne (5’5, 2023 Point Guard, First Baptist)  and Daunte Taylor (6’0, 2023 Wing/Forward, Goose Creek HS). All three of them finished scoring in double figures with Capers and Fishburne finishing with 15 points apiece and Taylor finishing with 11 points in the tough victory. They’re a squad to keep an eye on on Day 2 of action.

On the other side of the bracket, Big Shots Elite NC Lewis came out on top to face THS in the Gold Championship game. In their opening victory, Isaiah Washington (6’4, 2023 Guard, Pine Forest HS), Treymane Parker (6’2, 2023 Guard, Cape Fear HS) and Tyler Thompson (6’5, 2023 Forward, Panther Creek HS) put up big numbers for a 68-49 victory over M24 Legends (NC). Washington and Parker picked up where they left off last weekend at Big Shots Nationals, putting up 18 points and 11 points respectively while Thompson showed off his ability to make an impact with 16 points. Washington knocked down two 3-pointers while Parker knocked down one. Thompson showed off his ability to attack the rim.

In their second game of the day, they squeaked by Lowcountry Storm (SC), 56-54. This time, it was Alik Lewis (6’1, 2023 Point Guard, Alamance Christian) stepped up with a big 14 points to pace Washington (10 points) and Parker (14 points) on offense.

The Lowcountry Storm were led by Riley Allenspach (6’8, 2023 Forward/Center, Woodinville HS) and Calvin Davinroy (6’2, 2023 Guard/Wing, Wando HS) who put up 15 points and 14 points respectively to shoulder the scoring load. Allenspach is a versatile stretch-forward that knocked down three 3-pointers, despite the result to show off his skills. Davinroy is a downhill threat that’s coming along from the outside. He knocked down one 3-pointer in the loss.

In the Gold Championship Bracket of the 16U Division, Team HoopState finds themselves one win away from the title game thanks to the play of Deavion Wimbly (6’0, 2022 Point Guard, South View HS) Sean Sheridan (6’4, 2023 Wing/Forward, Cary Academy), Keon Webb (6’0, Guard, Riverside-Durham HS)and Jarod Brown (6’3, 2022 Forward, South View HS). Wimbly leads the division in total points (34) and 3-pointers made (6) entering Day 2 of the Big Shots Carolina Finale while Sheridan is averaging 8.0 ppg while Webb and Brown are at 9.0 ppg. 

They’ve used a balanced scoring attack to get two 2-point victories to enter the semifinal round of action on Day 2 against Carolina Ballin (SC) at 10:10 AM. Carolina Ballin was led by Otis Carter (5’11, 2022 Guard, Aiken HS) and C.J. Shaffer (6’4, 2022 Forward, Homeschool) in their opening day win over B.H.B. Carter put up 21 points and four 3-point makes while Shaffer held down the interior with 11 points. 

On the other side of the Gold Bracket, Renegades Elite - Cryer (NC) awaits in the title game. They got two wins in the opening round against the SC Wolfpack and Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities thanks to the play of Carson Cryer (5’10, 2022 Point Guard, Wakefield HS), Dre Prince (6’0, 2022 Guard, Wake Forest) and Johnathan Humphrey (6’3, 2022 Forward, Heritage). Each of them made two 3-pointers apiece in their 63-43 victory and showed that sharing the basketball leads to an easy win. They’ll be fun to watch in the championship game @ 1:25 PM on Sunday.

In the 17U Gold Bracket, Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities Blue will face off against Flight 22 Elite UA Rise (NC) @ 10:10 AM. Both teams were victorious in their opening games. Flight 22 Elite defeated Foothill Ballerz (NC) 69-36 behind a balanced scoring attack of Bennie Brooks (6’4, Wing/Guard, East Carteret HS), Bradlee Haskell (6’2, 2021 Guard, Pinecrest HS), and Charlie Miller (6’0, 2021 Guard, Lumberton HS). Brooks and Haskell finished with 13 points, Miller finished with 11. They’ll be some names to watch on Sunday.

LMR Basketball (SC) and Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities Orange will face each other in the semifinals @ 12:20 PM. LMR Basketball got two wins over Cap City Clutch and Lowcountry Elite to get to two wins from the Gold title. Jonathan Burns (6’4, 2021 Wing/Forward, South Aiken HS) leads a balanced rotation that looks to get after it on the defense. Grayson Renner (6’0, 2021 Guard, River Bluff HS) is a sharpshooter to watch, he made four 3-pointers in their win over Lowcountry Elite.

Luc Therrien (6’10, 2021 Forward, Moravian Prep) and Anthony Davis (6’5, 2022 Guard, Bishop McLaughlin) are two prospects to keep an eye on for Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities Orange. Therrien posted 15 points and Davis posted 12 in their win over WV Mpact to keep them alive in the Gold Bracket.

Big Shots Elite West Virginia is holding strong after a solid outing from Aiden Satterfield (6’6, 2021 Forward/Wing, Charleston Catholic), Zach Rosenthall (6’0, 2021 Guard, The Steward School) and Ryan Reasbeck (6’3, 2022 Guard, Wheeling Central Catholic) against Crusaders Basketball (NC). Satterfield led the way with 20 points while Rosenthall and Reasbeck made three 3-pointers each on the wing. They’ll be in action on Sunday at 12:20 PM against Big Shots Elite Tri-Cities Orange.

The trio overcame 27 points from Tychaun Clay (5’11, 2022 Point Guard, Hunt HS) from Crusdars Basketball, a prospect playing up an age division to secure a 69-63 victory. Crusaders Basketball opened bracket play with a victory over the SC Kings, 68-59. Khouri Carvey (6’7, 2022 Forward, Fike HS) and Gavin Gillikin (6’0, 2021 Guard, West Carteret) paced the offense in that one with 14 points each with big man Chatham Lambiotte (6’6, 2022 Forward, Cape Fear Christian Academy) right behind them with 12 points in the paint.

In the 14U Gold Bracket, Big Shots Select NC will face Big Shots Elite NC/TLBA Hoops @ 11:15 AM in what should be an entertaining battle between some top prospects in the younger classes. 

Big Shots Select NC is led by Brandon Ihle (6’2, 2024 Guard/Wing, West Lake MS) and Andrew Neal (5’3, Point Guard, Apex MS). Ihle leads the division in scoring (23.5 ppg) and total points (47) after a big day of offense. He put up 17 points against the Port City Stars then followed that up with a 30-point outing against Team ENC. He’s already a three-level scorer that’s made four 3-pointers in two games. Neal leads the division in 3-pointers made with six. He’s made three in each of their two wins on opening day of the Big Shots Carolina Finale.

Big Shots Elite NC/TLBA Hoops is led by the dynamic duo of Eli and Isaac Ellis (5’3, 2026 Point Guard, Homeschool), Amare Bethel (6’2, 2024 Guard, Northwood Temple), Jaylen Cross (6’2, 2024 Wing/Forward, NW Guilford MS) and big man Alex Olander (6’3, 2024 Forward, Ravenscroft School). Bethel and Cross are two guards that have taken a lot of the offensive scoring load off of the Ellis brothers’ shoulders. Bethel is averaging 20.5 ppg and Cross is averaging 18.5 ppg and sit among the Top 5 scorers in the division. Olander ranks fourth in the division in total points.
