Catching Up with VA 2022 SG Piercen Young

Piercen Young is a top 15 wing in Virginia's 2022 class. An all-around combo guard that makes scratches on the court. Standing at 6'3 he is a big guard with a strong frame with intangibles to shoot the three, handles of a true point guard, and facilitator on the floor. During the Big Shots 2019 Circuit season he starred for Team Loaded CVA 17U playing up two age divisions. On the varsity team at Virginia Episcopal School, Piercen averaged 10 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds per game in his sophomore campaign.  A coach's son that has basketball in his genes as his dad played at Nebraska Wesleyan and his sister is currently playing at Kent State. Piercen will be a player to watch on the circuit with VA Havoc and next season at VES.

We had a chance to catch up with Piercen Young and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.

Question: Which schools are showing you the most interest?

Piercen Young: “My recruiting process has been pretty slow recently, especially with me losing my spring AAU season I haven’t had the opportunity to be seen as much as I would like. I would say VMI has shown me the most interest though.”

Question: How did your high school season end up?

Young: “My high school season did not go as planned due to our team having injuries all year, including myself. We lost in the first round of states, but next year we get most of our team back and we will be ready to compete for a ring.”

Question: Were there any highlights or memorable moments throughout the year?

Young: “The most memorable moment for me was a play I made against Eastern Mennonite. Their PG threw the ball ahead in transition and I read his eyes and stole the ball mid air and threw it to my teammate. He fell on the ground and threw the ball back into the air. I did a behind the back dribble through the defender right when I got the ball and automatically threw a no look pass to Ish who dunked the ball. The game was in the 4th quarter and we were only up by a couple points, but this play gave us the momentum to close the game by double digits.”

Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?

Young: “Qualities I am looking for in college coach and program include, relationship building, discipline, accountability, and competitive nature. Also, a strong academic support for student athletes.”

Question: How would you describe your game on the court?

Young: “Being a guard who can play the 1 or 2 position, I strive to be a leader and make my teammates better. My game is very balanced; I think my biggest strengths are my shooting at all 3 levels, IQ, and rebounding for a guard.”

Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?

Young: “This past offseason I have focused on improving my defense, ball handling, and range on my jumper. I have noticed great improvement on my defensive footwork in the past year and my ability to guard 1-4. Transitioning into a PG I need to continue to work on strengthening my handle. I also want to improve my 3 point percentage (35) to in the 40’s next year. These improvements will help me get to the next level.”

Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?

Young: “My favorite player growing up was Paul Pierce. His ability to create space for his jumper is something I have always watched growing up, but recently I have watched a lot of Devin booker, Tyler Herro, and Ty Jerome. Devin and Tyler both have a great feel for the game and know how to get to their spots. While Ty has an outstanding IQ and is a big guard as well.”

Question: How have you been able to manage the quarantine while continuing to train and get better as a player?

Young: “During quarantine I have focused on finishing school with great grades, putting on muscle, and working on all the aspects I wrote above. I finished school about 2 weeks ago and I have put on 10 pounds of muscle. Also, I have enjoyed new hobbies, like fishing and hiking.”

We look forward to keeping up with Piercen and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in VA’s 2022 class.
