Catching Up with NC 2021 PF Jayvon Mercer

Jayvon Mercer is a versatile 3-4 combo in the NC 2021 class. Mercer is an outstanding rebounder that plays the game with great toughness and grit. Around the rim, Mercer can finish well over both shoulders and with both his right and left hand. Mercer has good quickness for his size and can use his strength to embrace contact in the paint. He is continuing to improve his perimeter shooting which will only add value to the very versatile player that he already is. The East Wake junior would be a great addition to any college program because of his talent, work ethic, and strong character. Mercer has been an extremely competitive player on the Big Shots circuit and has shown scouts and coaches he has all the intangibles that it takes to win.

We had a chance to catch up with Jayvon Mercer and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.

Question: How has the recruiting process been and which schools are showing you the most interest?

Jayvon: “I have not received any interests from colleges that I know of. I have not been promoted by anyone other then what has been posted on Twitter. I will be going to UNOH this summer to work out with their team as everything opens back up.”

Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?

Mercer: “I am looking for a coach to help me develop my game more and to guide me in becoming a great fit for a team that I can call family.”

Question: How would you describe your game on the court?

Mercer: “I am very versatile on the court. I can do damage in the post, I can take someone off the dribble, drive to the board with my right or left and I can dunk with my right or left also. I have been working a lot on my 3 point shot since the end of my season and just practicing to be an all around player.”

Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?

Mercer: “I am definitely working on my foul shots, mid range jump shot and 3 points shots so O can dominate in those areas of my game.”

Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?

Mercer: “Anthony Davis because I model the way he plays and gives his all 100 percent of the time winning or losing and that is what I liked the most.”

Question: How has playing in Big Shots events helped your player development and recruitment?

Mercer: “Big Shots have helped me because after every game whether it’s AAU or HS they have promoted me with kind words as well as my results after every game.”

We look forward to keeping up with Jayvon and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in NC’s 2021 class.
