Catching Up with SC 2021 SG Umar Lawson

Umar Lawson is a talented lefty slashing guard in the SC 2021 class. Lawson is a downhill driver that can finish well in traffic. He also has a solid mid-range jump shot and can create points for his team. One of the top athletes in the class, Lawson is constantly looking to dunk whenever possible. The Lakewood high school junior currently has a lot of D1 and D2 college interest and will soon be picking up multiple offers.  On the Big Shots circuit, Lawson has been an athletic scoring guard and will continue to impress coaches as we move forward.

We had a chance to catch up with Umar Lawson and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.

Question: How has the recruiting process been and which schools are showing you the most interest?

Umar Lawson: “The recruitment process has been steady.  I’ve had a few D1’s and a few D2’s about six of each! The D1 schools seem to be more consistent in contacting me!”

Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?

Lawson: “Some of the qualities that I’m looking for in a coach would be positivity, enthusiasm supportive, trusting, goal-oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, and patience! In a program I’m looking for a program that helps prepare it’s athletes for the next level and that really support their athletic teams, coaches and players!”

Question: How would you describe your game on the court?

Lawson: “I describe my game on the floor, as being a floor general! I can really facilitate the ball and I can also be a one making wrecking crew! I try to always get my teammates involved on and off the court! I can play nose to nose defense picking my opponent up 94 feet! I’m extremely athletic and can attack the basket at any given time! I also play to win, with hopes of getting to a D1 school!”

Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?

Lawson: “I would like to improve on every aspect of my game so that I can get to the next level!”

Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?

Lawson: “My favorite player is Darius Garland! He is my favorite player because he can easily change his speed, he picks his spots and get there when he wants to! He is a all around scorer and he always has a winners mentality!”

Question: How has playing in Big Shots events helped your player development and recruitment?

Lawson: “Big Shots has helped in my development and has helped me by improving my skills and game, while being able to play competitively at tournaments.  I work a lot harder and to challenge myself to consistently get better!”

We look forward to keeping up with Umar and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in SC’s 2021 class.
