Catching Up with SC 2021 PF AJ Hamrick

AJ Hamrick is one of the top stretch forwards in the SC 2021 class. The lengthy 3-4 combo can catch and shoot from both midrange and the perimeter. Hamrick plays great with a downhill driving guard that finds him on drop offs. AJ runs the floor well and plays hard with a high motor. Hamrick can protect the rim and use his length and athleticism to alter shots at the basket. The high academic Westminster Catawba Christian junior currently holds an offer from Army and has several other schools heavily interested. AJ has very high upside and will be a player that continues to develop.

We had a chance to catch up with AJ Hamrick and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.

Question: How has the recruiting process been and which schools are showing you the most interest?

AJ Hamrick: “The recruiting process is picking up slowly, but I’m blessed to have any school want to commit four years into me.”

Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?

Hamrick: “I’m looking for a coach/ school that will develop me into a better man for his community, better student in the classroom, and a better ball player on the court.”

Question: How would you describe your game on the court?

Hamrick: “I would describe my game on the court as raw, and passionate. I say that because I’ve only been taking basketball seriously for about 3 years now. I was never that kid that wanted to play in the NBA. I just wanted to play with my friends and family, Especially with both my parents being in the military I knew that I would move every 2-3 years from state to state. So I just wanted to use hoops as a way to make friends. Until my freshman year when I found a love for the game that would change my  perspective from then on.”

Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?

Hamrick: “The biggest areas I’ve been emphasizing during this downtime have been my lateral quickness, and my ability to take defenders off the dribble. Basically things I know I need to improve to show coaches that yeah I’m 6’9 but you’d just be wasting my talent by sticking me in the post.”

Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?

Hamrick: “My favorite player in the NBA to study is Giannis Antetokounmpo. I have learned the most from his first couple years in the league when he had to show and prove to the front office that he can do anything there favorite guards can do and then some.”

Question: How has playing in Big Shots events helped your player development and recruitment?

Hamrick: “Playing in Big Shots tournaments is a huge advantage to anybody who strives to play at the next level. They give you the platform and opportunity to show coaches your ability and skill set.”

We look forward to keeping up with AJ and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in SC’s 2021 class.
