Catching Up with NC 2021 SG AJ Smith

AJ Smith is a HM prospect that is relentless off the bounce, crashes the glass, and is a two-way guard. His ability to affect the game in so many fashions makes him a highly intriguing prospect in the NC 2021 class. Smith’s ability to score and defend at a high level has played a role in him earning current offers from Texas A&M, Elon, Hampton, UNC Charlotte, and App State. Smith has been a dominant force on the Big Shots Circuit for Team Charlotte as he earned MVP of the Big Shots CLT Live event last year.

We had a chance to catch up with AJ Smith and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.

Question: How has the recruiting process been and which schools are showing you the most interest?

AJ Smith: “The recruiting process has been going well for me. I have offers from UNCC, App State, Texas A&M, Hampton,  Winthrop, Elon, and UNCW. I have been hearing lately from schools like Stanford, Harvard, Providence, and receiving mail from Virginia and Clemson.”

Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?

Smith: “I am looking for a Coach who believes in his players, and one who is passionate about winning.”

Question: How would you describe your game on the court?

Smith: “On the court I feel I am a 3 level scorer who can defend 3 positions. I am a competitive who can get my teammates involved and really crash the boards.”

Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?

Smith: “I really have been working on my 3 point shot.  I have also made strides on my vocal leadership and being a leader on the court.”

Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?

Smith: “I love studying Bradley Beal.  I feel like I can relate to his game because he has a strong frame and can really create for himself as well as his teammates.”

Question: How has playing in Big Shots events helped your player development and recruitment?

Smith: “I remember playing for my first sponsored Team in Team Charlotte. The atmosphere at the Big Shots tournament was electric and this event put me on the radar of many college Coaches.”

We look forward to keeping up with AJ and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in NC’s 2021 class.
